Valentines Day » History of Valentines Day
Valentines Day is celebrated every year on 14th February as the day dedicated to the people in love. There are several legends behind the origin of Valentines Day. But the most accepted version of origins of Valentine day is that it is the day when St. Valentine, a priest in Rome was assassinated by the autocratic ruler Claudius II in third century BC. It is believed that St Valentine defied the orders of Claudius II to stop performing marriage ceremonies of lovers. The ruling of no marriage was passed as the autocratic ruler believed that single men serve well as soldiers.

The holy St Valentine is said to have feared none except Lord Christ and hence continued to perform marriage rites for many couples. The Roman king however imprisoned the Saint. But being an epitome of love Saint Valentine transformed the people in the jail as well and could not resist falling in love himself with the jailor's daughter. It is believed that when Claudius II got to know of all this he got the Saint assassinated in AD 269. However the deeply in love St Valentine sent his lover a final note which stated "from your valentine". It is since then that the people who are deeply in love send to someone special in their lives a love note always signed as from your valentine.

Another legend regarding the origin of Valentine day on 14th February is again shrouded in Roman mythology and history. In ancient Rome fourteenth February was a day on which the Roman goddess Juno was honored. She was the Queen of Roman gods and goddesses and also governed the affairs of women and marriage. On the following day the feast of Lupercalia used to begin. On the eve of this feast names of young girls and boys were put in a jar and each were given a partner according to the draw. For the festival the young men stayed with their chosen partner. And sometimes this togetherness lasted for a year and eventually a lifetime as both of them fell in love with each other and subsequently married. It was thus the Roman day of choosing maidens for young boys and afterwards began to be celebrated on the day of martyrdom of St Valentine. The celebration of Valentine day in Britain and America began in the 1700s when lovers either exchanged love notes or small gifts as token of love on this day. Now the Valentine day is celebrated not only in the west but has spread its allure over Asian, African and all the European countries.
